Tennis team loses two WAC matches

Smoky Mountain’s tennis team finished its inaugural season 1-9 with a pair of Western Athletic Conference losses last week.

West Henderson took an 8-1 win Sept. 29 at West, and Pisgah was a 9-0 winner two days later in the final home match at Mark Watson Park.

“We had a great season,” Coach Rebecca Moore said. “My goal for the year was to win at least one match which we did. For a brand new team with the majority never playing before, they have exceeded my expectations. I am very proud of them, and they have come a long way from where they began.”

Emily Butcher, SM’s #1 seed, defeated West’s Kaylin Waldrop 10-5.

Other singles matches, all won by the Lady Falcons, included:

Jessica Tobin over Leslie Schallock 10-2, #2; Breana Fuentes over Alyssa Walawender 10-1, #3; Elizabeth Huntley over Ashley Baggett 10-1, #4; Chandler Coleman over Allie Garrett 10-2, #5; and Madison Slagle over Sheridan Wilson 10-7, #6.

Courtney Elders won an exhibition match 10-4.

Fuentes and Amie Cloer over Walawender and Butcher 8-0, #1; Coleman and Huntley over Schallock and Baggett 8-4, #2; Sam Hartz and Whitney Howell over Wilson and Shelby Stribling 8-4, #3.

Results of singles matches against Pisgah, all won by the Sugar Bears, include:

Erin Kearse over Butcher 10-1, #1; Rachel Arndt over Schallock 10-4, #2; Sarah Gosnell over Reynolds 10-1, #3; Abby Trantham over Walawender 11-9, #4; Cameron Robinson over Wilson 10-3, #5; Sydney Metcalf over Elders 10-2, #6.
