Brevard defeats SM in conference action

Smoky Mountain dropped a 25-16, 25-15, 25-7 Western Athletic Conference volleyball decision on Sept. 30 at Brevard.

“We’re continuing to make adjustments,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “I felt like we competed well. We’re trying some different things, and we’re responding well.”

Shayla Jackson served there points and Natasha Key had a kill for a 6-5 edge in game one. The Lady Devils took the lead for good at 8-7.

Brevard jumped in front 10-4 in the second game and never looked back. SM made a late run as four points by Jordan Cagle cut the gap to 20-15.

Game three was never close after the Lady Devils scored the first five points.

Key led in kills with five while Cagle was tops in digs with eight. Katie Spiro finished with seven digs and six assists.

Cagle led in service points with five while serving 90 percent. Annelise Davis also served 90 percent, and Spiro didn’t miss in three serves.

Team serving was 85 percent.

The Lady Mustang JVs won 16-25, 25-13, 25-17.

“We had a slow start, but once they warmed up and got in rhythm they played well,” Coach Nikki Toedtman said. “We were very aggressive and attacked the ball. We played well as a team.”
