Swain volleyball team remains unbeaten with victory over SM
Undefeated Swain downed Smoky Mountain 25-16, 27-25, 17-25, 25-12 in a non-conference volleyball match Sept. 15 at the SM gym.
“In games two and three we played as well as we have all year,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “We passed well and played with intensity.”
Swain jumped to a 10-1 lead in game one. Three points from Jordan Cagle and Natasha Key’s kill cut the gap to 15-13, but that was as close as the Lady Mustangs would come.
SM had a golden opportunity to even the match in game two after taking a 21-13 lead following Jodi Henkel’s six points and two kills by Flea Johnson. The Lady Devils roared back and ended the game on a 14-4 run.

The Lady Mustangs led throughout game three after taking a 7-5 edge on Henkel’s four points and kills by Cagle and Johnson. Cagle served the final three points, including two aces.
Swain took a 9-3 lead in the fourth game and never looked back. Kayla Moore served three points narrowing the deficit to 22-12, but it was too little, too late.
Cagle put down 10 kills, and Johnson had nine. Katie Spiro and Moore handed out 13 and 11 assists, respectively. Cagle came up with five digs, and Johnson had two and a half blocks.
Henkel led in service points with 14 while serving 95.5 percent. Not missing a serve were Johnson (nine) and Spiro (eight). Cagle served 91.7 percent. Team serving was 91.3 percent.
Swain won the JV match 25-17. 25-17.
“We’re not playing to our potential,” Coach Nikki Toedtman said.
