SMHS lists homecoming week events

Homecoming activities at Smoky Mountain High School will get under way this year with next Monday’s downtown parade.

The school’s annual parade will depart from Mark Watson Park at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 29, and travel down Main Street before ending at the Sylva Fire Department.

This year’s grand marshal is Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Transit and Tourism Authority Director Julie Spiro.

Different clubs, grade levels and athletic teams will sponsor floats. One float will feature the SMHS homecoming court.

Also on the agenda for SMHS Homecoming Week:

– Monday, Sept. 29: Twin day; men’s soccer at East Henderson, JV beginning at 5 p.m., varsity beginning at 7 p.m.; women’s tennis at West Henderson; homecoming door contest, homecoming banner contest.

– Tuesday, Sept. 30: Decades day (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s); Lady Mustangs’ volleyball at Brevard, JV beginning at 5 p.m., varsity beginning at 6 p.m.; door contest; banner contest.

– Wednesday, Oct. 1: Movie character/superhero day; door contest judging; banner contest judging; women’s tennis vs. Pisgah; powder puff games on the football field, freshman team vs. senior team beginning at 6:30 p.m., sophomore team vs. junior team beginning at 7 p.m. and championship game beginning at 7:30 p.m.

– Thursday, Oct. 2: Cowboy/cowgirl day; pep rally beginning at 2 p.m. where door contest, banner and homecoming float winners will be announced along with Homecoming King; JV football game at Tuscola beginning at 7 p.m.; men’s soccer vs West Henderson, JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.; cross country meet at Enloe Farm, Franklin.

– Friday, Oct. 3: Camo-Blue day, SMHS club sponsored activities from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.; SMHS talent show in the gym; Homecoming football game vs. Tuscola beginning at 7:30 p.m.; homecoming court and crowning of queen at halftime; after-game homecoming dance sponsored by the Student Council in the cafeteria.
