Pedaling the Parkway

092208tourdetuckridersc
A few of the 255 riders who entered this year’s Tour de Tuck pedal the Parkway near the Roy Taylor Forest overlook. This year’s race, sponsored by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, had a 16 percent increase in participation over last year, according to Chamber Director Julie Spiro. Almost half the riders indicated they spent one or more nights in Jackson County, she said. Sylva Rotary Club members manned all the aid stations and were “terrific volunteers,” Spiro said, adding that a portion of the rider fees were donated to Rotary in exchange for their assistance. The Tour de Tuck course sends riders from Sylva to the Cherokee entrance of the Parkway and along the scenic road as far as Beech Gap. From there participants take N.C. 215 to Charleys Creek Road and return to Sylva through Canada Community, Tuckasegee and Cullowhee.
