N. Henderson wins over Lady Mustangs
North Henderson cruised past Smoky Mountain 25-10, 25-15, 25-18 in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match last Thursday at North.
The Lady Mustangs (4-10, 0-3) were close until midway through the first game when the Lady Knights went on a 14-2 run.
SM led 5-2 in the second game after Annelise Davis served four points, including two aces. North opened a 16-9 lead midway through game two and stayed in control.
The Lady Knights were ahead throughout he third game. Jordan Cagle’s three points and Kayla Moore’s block made it 10-7, but the Lady Mustangs could not come any closer.
Flea Johnson had six kills, and Cagle finished with six digs. Katie Spiro totaled seven assists.
Davis led in service points with nine. Cagle and Natasha Key were both perfect in seven serves. Team serving was 89.1 percent.
“We made some adjustments in the third game, and they worked well,” Coach Cindi Simmons said.
Those changes included moving Moore from setter to middle hitter and using Chandler Stalcup as a setter.
The moves came about in part from two players being sidelined for the season due to injuries. Jodi Henkel was hurt in the first match of the year but had played until last week when she was diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament. Laura Ward last played Sept. 3, and she has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in her leg.
“I feel bad for them because they had worked so hard,” Simmons said. “The good thing is they’ll both be back next year.”
The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 6-6 with a 25-16, 25-13 loss.
“For the most part we played pretty well,” Coach Nikki Toedtman said. “We just seemed a half step slow. That was the best hitting team we’ve played against, but we’re getting there.”
