Mustangs keep Enka soccer team winless
Smoky Mountain’s soccer team kept Enka winless with a 4-1 non-conference victory on Sept. 15 at Enka.
Brandon Norris scored two goals for the Mustangs.
“Last year’s game sort of left a bad taste in our mouths,” Coach Dolphus Brown said of a 3-2 overtime loss. “We were real excited about getting another chance to play those guys. We were thrilled to get that win. We played a strong game offensively and defensively.”
Jarrod Couch opened the scoring at the 21:38 mark off an assist from Richard Ramirez.
“Richard played it from outside the box on the right side diagonally,” Brown said. “Jarrod got the ball about 15 yards away and shot across the goal to the far post.”
Cort Smith headed in Matt Dougherty’s throw-in to the near post for a 2-0 lead exactly two minutes later.
Norris gave SM a 3-0 halftime advantage when he scored at the 38:30 mark.
“Brandon picked it up around the top of the box and dribbled about 5 yards then shot to the far post,” the coach said.
The Mustangs made it 4-0 just under four minutes into the second half as Norris scored after Smith flicked Dougherty’s throw-in with his head to Norris, who shot from 7 yards.
“We scored late in the first half and early in the second,” Brown pointed out. “That takes something out of a team.”
The Jets averted the shutout on Clint Roberts’ penalty kick following a foul in the box at the midpoint of the second half.
SM controlled the game with a 23-7 advantage in shots. Max Macedo made six saves for the Mustangs while Enka’s Casey Warren had 12.
The Jets won the JV game 3-0 with all of the scoring in the first half.
Blake Masson was named player of the game.
