East Henderson rallies by SM in conference match
East Henderson defeated Smoky Mountain 19-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-15 in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match Sept. 16 at East.
“We played very well in the first game and most of game two,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “We weren’t able to sustain that momentum in games three and four.”
SM was up 7-6 in the first game following Kayla Moore’s three points and Flea Johnson’s block. After falling behind, the Lady Mustangs rallied with Jodi Henkel serving five points, including an ace, and Johnson having a block, for an 18-16 advantage. Kayla Moore’s three points, including an ace, made it 22-18. Johnson served the final two points with Annelise Davis providing a kill.
Moore’s four points produced a 6-6 tie in game two. Jordan Cagle’s five points, including an ace, put SM up 13-10. East took control down the stretch to even the match.
The Lady Eagles scored the first eight points of game three and were never threatened.
The Lady Mustangs trailed most of the fourth game although Cagle’s four points, including three straight aces, cut the gap to 13-11. East scored the next six points and breezed to the win.
Johnson had three kills and four blocks. Spiro recorded six assists. Cagle came up with eight digs, and Henkel had six.
Moore and Cagle were tops in service points with 11 and 10, respectively. Davis didn’t miss in 13 serves, and Johnson was perfect in seven. Henkel served 93.3 percent. Team serving was 90.3 percent.
The Lady Mustang JVs won 25-22, 25-22.
“It makes a tremendous difference when we communicate on the floor and move our feet,” Coach Nikki Toedtman said. “We passed extremely well.”
She singled out Madee Seagle for her passing and Shayla Jackson for her hitting.
