Cross country teams run in pair of meets

Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in a pair of meets last week.

In each case, the squads did not have enough runners to qualify for the team standings.

Whitney Wagner was the top finisher for the Lady Mustangs on Sept. 17 in a meet hosted by Owen at Black Mountain Park. She was 18th among 175 runners in 22:35.

Cadence Railsback placed 32nd in 23:19, and Emily Cowan was 138th in 28:58.

Adam Ray led the Mustang men as he was 45th out of 199 runners in 19:35. Other SM finishers included:

Chris Rosbor, 162nd, 24:52; Josh Seay, 170th, 25:33; and Matt Turpin, 193rd, 31:30.

“The kids ran hard,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “They loved the course. We had a lot of Asheville area runners we hadn’t been running with.”

Railsback paced the Lady Mustangs on Saturday in the Western Carolina Invitational at Cullowhee. She was 13th among 57 runners in 22:21.

Wagner was 14th, just a second behind Railsback.

Katie Spiro was 21st in 23:28, and Emily Cowan placed 51st in 30:40.

Ray again led the men by finishing 14th out of 48 runners in 18:52.

Josh Seay took two minutes off his best time to place 41st in 23:53. Rosbor was 43rd in 25:30 while Turpin was 48th in 28:46, which was his best time.

“Everyone ran really hard,” Hopper said.
