Ramirez, Berry help Mustangs rip Murphy
Richard Ramirez and Keller Berry both scored three goals with Ramirez also contributing four assists as Smoky Mountain blitzed Murphy 12-0 in a non-conference soccer game Sept. 2 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
“It was one of those games where we clearly outmanned Murphy,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “They’re trying to find themselves. They’re very young, and we’re a veteran team. We wanted our young men to play hard, but we also wanted to take advantage of this game in a way that would be productive for us and, hopefully, for Murphy as well.”
He put restrictions on taking shots before making a certain number of passes and limited players to no more than three touches after receiving the ball.
“Even then we were able to score pretty much when we wanted to,” the coach said.
He added that several JVs played much of the game with the lineup almost entirely JVs the final 14 minutes.
The Mustangs quickly took control with goals in the third, fourth and fifth minute.
