Lady Mustang tennis team debuts with pair of matches
Smoky Mountain’s new women’s tennis team made its debut with two matches last week.
The Lady Mustangs’ first match was a 5-4 loss Sept. 3 at East Henderson.
“It was a fairly even matchup,” Coach Rebecca Moore said. “They are a new team too. Their number 1 seed was really good. A couple of our girls were a lot better than theirs.”
Results of singles matches were as follows:
Number 1, Jeni Greene (E) over Elena Reynolds 10-1; number 2, Leslie Schallock (S) over Jessica Hamilton 10-5; number 3, Emily Butcher (S) over Anna Zehr 10-2; number 4, Sara Reese (E) over Alyssa Walawender 10-8; number 5, Irishh Perez (E) over Allie Garrett 10-6; number 6, Ashley Baggett (S) over Stephanie Hudson by forfeit.
Doubles results included:
Number 1, Greene and Hamilton (E) over Reynolds and Schallock 8-3; number 2, Butcher and Baggett (S) won a 7-3 tie-breaker after a 7-7 tie over Anna Zehr and Sara Reese; number 3, Perez and Ana Castillo (E) over Shelby Stribling and Sarah Ogletree 8-5.
In an exhibition singles match that did not count in the team score, SM’s Sheridan Wilson defeated Castillo 10-4.
Brevard rolled to a 9-0 win in last Thursday’s home-opener at Mark Watson Park.
“Brevard is the best in the (Western Athletic) Conference,” Moore said. “Their top four seeds went to state last year. They were really good, but that was good for us to play against a team like that.”
Singles results included:
Number 1, Davis Clare Hyett (B) over Reynolds 10-0; number 2, Julia Van Horn (B) over Schallock 10-1; number 3, Lauren Fuller (B) over Butcher 10-3; number 4, Kate Treacy (B) over Alyssa Walawender 10-0; number 5, Katie Honer (B) over Wilson 10-0; number 6, Baylee Hale (B) over Ogletree 10-0.
Doubles results included:
Number 1, Hyett and Van Horn (B) over Reynolds and Schallock 8-0; number 2, Fuller and Treacy (B) over Butcher and Walawender 8-1; number 3, Honer and Allie Barnes (B) over Haley Brooks and Courtney Elders 8-0.
