Henkel’s serving helps SM to volleyball win at Tuscola

Smoky Mountain held off Tuscola 25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 25-20 in a non-conference volleyball match Sept. 2 at Tuscola.

“We saw a lot of good things come together,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “We hit well, and we passed well.”

Jodi Henkel had a tremendous night serving. She finished with 25 points, including nine aces, while serving 93.3 percent.

Kayla Moore’s three points, including two aces, gave SM a 5-1 lead in game one. Henkel ran off six points, including aces on three straight points, while Flea Johnson had a kill and a block for an 18-9 advantage. The Lady Mountaineers cut the gap to 22-19 before the game ended on a side out.

After the Lady Mustangs fell behind 11-4 in the second game, Henkel brought her team back with six points, including two aces, which along with Annelise Davis’ kill resulted in a 14-12 edge. Tuscola closed the game on a 6-2 run to even the match.

Johnson’s three points put SM up 7-2 in game three. Tuscola moved ahead midway through the game, but Henkel’s three points, including two aces, and Johnson’s kill tied it 23-23. The Lady Mustangs held off one match point before Davis served two points, including an ace, with the game ending on Johnson’s block.

Nine points, including two aces, by Henkel along with two Johnson kills and one by Davis resulted in a 16-9 lead in the fourth game. Appropriately enough, the match ended on Henkel’s serve.

Johnson put down 13 kills, and Laura Ward had eight. Katie Spiro had 17 assists and four digs while Moore handed out 13 assists.

Jordan Cagle was perfect in 11 serves while Johnson served 91.7 percent. Team serving was 88.5 percent.

Simmons singled out Henkel for her serving, Johnson for her hitting and Spiro and Moore for their assists.

The Lady Mustang JVs won 25-17, 25-8.

“We played very well and communicated well,” Coach Nikki Toedtman said. “The only bad part was we missed 10 serves in the first game. That’s unusual for us. In the second game, we got back on track.”

She cited Sarah Cochran for her hitting and passing.
