In 1910 the Jackson County Journal was published from a house on Allen Street located near where Hooper Builders Supply operated for years. From left are Everette E. Brown and N.B. Moore, editor and business manager, respectively. Dan Tompkins took over as editor two years later and held that post for some 31 years. The Journal, termed a “casualty of World War II,” in The History of Jackson County, ceased publication in October 1943. Brown, grandfather of Sylva Herald Assistant Editor Carey Phillips, founded The Ruralite, the paper that became The Herald, in 1926. This photo is among more than 200 images in “Sylva,” the book by current Herald Editor Lynn Hotaling that goes on sale Monday, Sept. 15. Part of Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” series, “Sylva” includes many never-before published photos of Sylva between the 1890s and 1970s. An author event is planned for 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at City Lights Bookstore. For information, or to reserve a copy of the book, call City Lights at 586-9499. A portion of the book’s proceeds will benefit the Jackson County Genealogical Society and the new library building fund. – Photo courtesy of Rachel Brown Phillips
