Then and now

Sylva Elementary School, left in top photo, opened in 1929. The building was condemned in 1948 and classes were held in downtown churches until repairs could be completed. The elementary school expanded into the adjacent high school building after the opening of Sylva-Webster High School in 1960, and the above building continued to be used until Fairview Elementary opened in 1973 and was torn down the next year. The rock building to the right is the old high school agricultural building, which is still standing and housed the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department until 1999. The former school campus is now Mark Watson Park and is operated by the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department. The Herald publishes either a “Back Then” or “Then and Now” feature each week and welcomes photo submissions from readers. Several photos from this series are included in “Sylva,” the book due Sept. 15 from Arcadia Publishing, and others will be featured in an upcoming “Jackson County Then and Now” book. – Courtesy of Jackson County Schools, top, and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
