Smoky Mountain to play Friday against Hayesville
Two football teams looking for their first win of the season will meet Friday when Smoky Mountain travels to Hayesville for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
The Yellow Jackets have lost 16-6 to Copper Basin, Tenn., and 35-13 to Union County, Ga.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs have seen fourth quarter leads slip away in setbacks to Hendersonville (18-15) and Swain (20-16).
“Once again there’s not a lot of letdown in (the Smoky Mountain) Conference even when they’re down somewhat,” Galloway said. “From what we’ve seen on film, they seem to be getting better.”
Galloway said he had been impressed with safety Tim Shaffer and fullback Brett Moody
“Moody has given us trouble the past couple of years,” the coach said.
The Yellow Jackets are coached by Neil Setzer, a 1976 Sylva-Webster High graduate.
They use a spread offense. Galloway said it was difficult to determine what defense Hayesville would line up in because both teams they have played also use a spread causing the scheme to be altered.
“We’re not where we want to be, and neither are they,” Galloway said. “Obviously, one of us needs to step up Friday.”
The Mustangs hold a 10-3 advantage in the series after a 34-20 victory last year.
SM suffered a tough loss Friday as Swain used a 68-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute to play for the 20-16 victory.
“It was heart-breaking and frustrating,” Galloway said. “We didn’t feel like we played well in the first quarter, but we came out in the third quarter with the kind of intensity we needed. That last play was just the luck of the bounce.”
The pass was deflected and juggled before being caught. Up until that point, Swain has been limited to 9 yards and nine offensive plays in the second half.
“We did all the things necessary to win, but sometimes it doesn’t happen,” Galloway said.
