Lady Mustangs split pair of Asheville volleyball matches

Smoky Mountain split a pair of non-conference volleyball matches last Thursday at Asheville.

The Lady Mustangs (3-4) defeated Carolina Day (25-15, 25-16) after losing the first match to Asheville (25-20, 25-20).

“We bounced back, refocused and played with more enthusiasm against Carolina Day,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “We started that late in the second game of the Asheville match, and it carried over.”

SM took the lead for good in the first game against Carolina Day at 6-3 after Flea Johnson served three points, including an ace, and Jordan Cagle had a kill. Katie Spiro reeled off seven points while Annelise Davis and Laura Ward had kills extending the margin to 15-6. The Lady Wildcats never made a run.

Davis served the first five points of game two with Johnson having a kill. Kayla Moore followed with four points, including an ace, making it 9-2. The Lady Mustangs maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way and ended the match on Johnson’s kill.

Johnson put down six kills, and Spiro handed out seven assists.

Davis led in service points with eight and served 92.3 percent. Johnson and Jodi Henkel were perfect in eight and four serves, respectively. Team serving was 91.8 percent.

Asheville took control midway through the first game of the opening match then held off SM down the stretch.

The Lady Mustangs were up 11-8 in game one after Henkel served three points with Johnson and Natasha Key having kills. The Lady Cougars moved ahead 17-14 and went on to the win.

Asheville roared to a 15-5 lead in the second game. SM cut the gap to 22-17 after four points from Davis but could not come any closer.

Davis was tops in service points with eight and didn’t miss in 12 serves. Also serving 100 percent were Cagle (10), Johnson and Henkel (six apiece), Moore (three) and Key (one). Team serving was 97.6 percent.
