Franklin takes match from Lady Mustangs

Franklin defeated Smoky Mountain 25-18, 25-20, 25-15 in a non-conference volleyball match Aug. 26 at Franklin.

“We bounced back well after a disappointing loss the night before,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “We competed in all three games, but we just couldn’t put things together to make the runs we needed to win.”

SM led 5-3 in the first game after Kayla Moore served four points and Jordan Cagle had a kill. The Lady Panthers scored five straight points to take the lead for good at 13-10.

Franklin maintained a narrow lead through most of game two until opening up the margin late. Jodi Henkel’s three points and Flea Johnson’s kill cut the gap to 22-20, but the Lady Panthers held on.

Katie Spiro’s two points, including an ace, pulled the Lady Mustangs into an 11-11 tie in the third game, but they weren’t able to move in front. Franklin scored the final six points of the match.

Spiro had five assists, and Cagle finished with four kills.

Moore and Johnson both had six service points. Henkel and Cagle were perfect in nine and eight serves, respectively. Team serving was 83.6 percent.

The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 3-2 with a 25-14, 25-8 loss.

“We just didn’t come ready to play,” Coach Nikki Toedtman said.
