Cross country teams run at W. Henderson

Smoky Mountain’s cross country teams traveled to West Henderson on Aug. 27.

“Our numbers were real small,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “We only had five runners.”

Neither the men or women had enough runners to qualify for the team standings.

Adam Ray led the Mustang men as he was 32nd among 202 runners in 18:59. Josh Seay was 159th in 24:24, and Matt Turpin placed 201st in 34:14.

“Adam has a blister on his foot,” Hopper said. “He was running real well then he dropped back some. Joey ran hard, and this was Matt’s first 5K.”

Whitney Wagner was 25th for the Lady Mustangs in 22:57. Elizabeth Hammer came in 153rd in 29:29.

The number of runners wasn’t available.

“That was Whitney’s personal record,” Hopper said. “It was Elizabeth’s first 5K.”

Rain associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay had stopped by the time the meet was held, but the weather was still a factor.

“There was one spot on the course where there was six inches of water and mud,” Hopper said. “It was a good meet but a tough meet.”
