Western players are in summer leagues
Seven Western Carolina baseball players are looking to hone their skills in various summer wooden bat leagues scattered around the nation.
WCU has two players each playing in the Northwoods, Valley and Cape Cod leagues, with one in the California Collegiate League.
Sophomore infielder Nick Liles and left-handed hurler Chris Masters are playing for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod League.
Classmates Tyler Kirkpatrick and Daniel Ottone are playing in the Valley League. Kirkpatrick, an infielder, is with the Winchester (Va.) Royals while Ottone, a right-handed pitcher, returned to the Fauquier (Va.) Gators.
A pair of Catamounts are in the Northwoods League. Freshmen right-handed pitchers Brandon Johnson is playing for the Madison (Wis.) Mallards, and Matt Benedict is with the Duluth (Minn.) Huskies.
Sophomore catcher Stephen Notaro is a member of the California Oaks in the California Collegiate League.
