WCU’s Sexton, Murphy taken in baseball draft

Western Carolina senior left-handed pitcher Tyler Sexton and senior catcher Blake Murphy were both chosen Friday on the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Sexton was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 31st round as the 926th pick. Murphy went in the 42nd round when the St. Louis Cardinals made him the 1,265th pick.

Murphy was drafted in the 37th round by the New York Yankees out of Tuscola High School but chose to attend WCU. He was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 50th round last year but returned to Western for his senior season.

Sexton, who is from High Point, struggled as a senior with a 4-4 record and a 6.95 ERA. He was used exclusively as a reliever after April 1 and posted a 3.03 ERA. Sexton entered the season with 20 career wins.

Murphy finished tied for fifth in career home runs (47), doubles (60), RBIs (205), and runs (190).

As a senior, he batted .358 with a school record .531 on-base percentage and 16 homers.
