Local high schools prepare for graduation programs

As the school year comes to an end, local seniors are preparing for a major transition: high school graduation.
Smoky Mountain High School, the Jackson County School of Alternatives (the Hub) and Blue Ridge School are presenting a total of 224 students for graduation.
SMHS and Blue Ridge graduation ceremonies will be held tonight (Thursday, June 12). The SMHS ceremony will be at 7 p.m. at Western Carolina University’s Ramsey Center while the Blue Ridge graduation will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the school’s auditorium.
The Hub ceremony was planned for Wednesday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m. and was to be held at WCU’s Coulter Hall.
SMHS student speakers will include senior Meagan Green, student body president and salutatorian Britney Acosta, valedictorian Carolyn Ford, senior class president Anthony Stephens, student body vice president Brittany Haskett, who will present the senior gift, and senior class photographer Jarrett Frazier, who will have a slide show presentation.
Guest speaker will be Jason “Bear” Bradley, a social studies teacher and assistant football and baseball coach at the school. He will be introduced by senior class Vice President Paige Brooks.
Assistant Principals Raylene Bryson and Anthony Bethea will present the candidates with Principal Jay Grissom and Superintendent Sue Nations presenting the diplomas.
Blue Ridge student speakers will include Logan Queen, valedictorian Greg Ferrin and salutatorian Daniel Shuey.
Commencement speaker will be Blue Ridge graduate Nathan Moss, a former member of the Jackson County Board of Education.
Scholarship presentations will be made by Blue Ridge counselor Helen Thrasher.
Diplomas will be awarded by Principal Roy Sapough, Assistant Principal Beverly Van Hook and Assistant Superintendent Steve Jones.
Nations will be awarding diplomas to Hub students.
