Frerking is named assistant athletic director at Western
Brian Frerking has been named assistant athletic director for development at Western Carolina.
He brings experience from North Carolina and Texas A&M and will join the WCU Catamount Club in helping bolster fund-raising efforts.
Frerking joins new Catamount Club Director Gorham Bradley, and assistant Sandy Neuenschwander.
“Brian brings a great deal of experience from two of the most successful athletic fund-raising organizations in the country,” Athletic Director Chip Smith said. “At the Ram’s Club (UNC) he primarily worked with annual giving and with club members. While with the 12th Man Foundation (Texas A&M), he has been a very important part of their recent $61 million capital campaign. We are very pleased to welcome Brian and his wife, Jackie, to the Catamount family.”
Frerking most recently served as associate vice president for major gifts with A&M’s 12th Man Foundation. He was responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting gifts of $25,000 and above, as well as the management of the planned giving program for the 12th Man Foundation. Frerking was a member of the fund-raising team that has raised more than $50 million since spring 2005 for facility improvements, operational costs for the 20 athletic programs at A&M and endowments for student-athlete scholarships.
Prior to joining the 12th Man Foundation, Frerking was associate director for annual giving at UNC, working primarily with the Rams Club. From 2001-05, he served a variety of roles including supervising the volunteer membership network known as the “Rams Reps,” introducing the student Rams Club and revising the young alumni program, and assisting with the strategic goals of the annual fund which nearly doubled in revenue over his five years in the position.
“I am very excited to join the Catamount athletic staff at this critical juncture,” Frerking said. “I had the opportunity to meet with many of the head coaches during my interview process and feel strongly that Director of Athletics Chip Smith has done a great job of putting together a fantastic group of coaches that can lead this athletics program to new heights. As with any program, financial support is essential to provide the resources that the coaches and student-athletes require to participate at the elite level in the Southern Conference. I am looking forward to working with the staff and the passionate alumni and fans of WCU athletics to build championship programs in every sport.”
A 1998 graduate of Texas A&M where he was a two-time GTE Student-Athlete Academic Award recipient and member of the basketball team, Frerking received his master’s of sports administration from North Carolina in 2002.
