Western nips Mercer in 10-inning contest

Capitalizing on both a wild pitch and passed ball, Dylan de Graaf scored the game-winning run as Western Carolina took an 8-7 non-conference baseball victory in 10 innings at Mercer on April 23.

Tyler Sexton (2-4) pitched three innings of hitless relief for the win.

Barrett Shaft was perfect at the plate going four of four. Blake Murphy had two hits.

The Bears struck in the opening inning on John Dortch’s home run.

The Catamounts went up 5-1 in the third with the big blow Murphy’s three-run homer. Shaft had an RBI single, and de Graaf delivered a sacrifice fly.

Joe Winker’s two-run homer and Dortch’s sacrifice fly cut the gap to 5-4 in the fourth.

The Bears tied it on a wild pitch in the fifth.

WCU regained the lead at 7-5 in the sixth on a wild pitch and Murphy’s RBI single.

Mercer tied the game with single runs in the seventh and eighth on Dortch’s RBI single and Tyler McCarty’s squeeze bunt.

Dortch and Tyler Brown both had two hits for the Bears.

Mercer reliever Boone Webster took the loss.
