Notes from our business community
- and everywhere else

OUR “ART AFTER DARK” story on page 1C this week is missing some information. In addition to the events listed there, this month’s Friday night, May 2, gallery stroll will include “Dancing Elephants, Curious Fairies and Elegant Unicorns” at Main Street’s It’s by Nature gallery. The exhibit is by fiber doll artist and 2001 Smoky Mountain High School graduate Zan Barnes. Zan is the daughter of Riverwood Pottery owners Brant and Karen Barnes. Also, Bubacz’s Underground Cafe will host an artists’ reception for “Fables,” a solo-show of illustrations by Shirl Sazynski-Unrath, which will run through Thursday, May 15.

LAST WEEK’S “BACK THEN” photo of the students who attended school at the old Barkers Creek Baptist Church had a misspelling of one of the names: it should have read “Beulah Beck” and not “Bruluah Beck.” Thanks to reader Annie Mae Brown for helping us correct the error.

THE COUNTRY CLASSICS BAND will perform for dancing from 7-11 p.m. on Fridays, May 9, 16, 23, 30, at the Savannah Community Building. Admission is $5 with children 12 and under admitted free. The band specializes in classic country and will take requests. Members are Earl Cowart, Rick Morris, Gar Mosteller, Tony Ruff, Mary Ellen Davis, and Jerry and Teresa Painter. Refreshments will be available, and no alcohol is allowed. The community building is located on the right side of U.S. 23/441 (traveling south) three miles from Dillsboro. For more information, call Jerry or Teresa Painter at 631-1279.

HARRIS REGIONAL HOSPITAL AUXILIARY THRIFT STORE will begin a new silent auction Friday, May 2. Items up for bid include an antique bear and vintage doll; a collection of three large decorative vases; a crocheted coverlet; size 82 inches by 68 inches; a dulcimer harp; and LP collector albums in mint condition. Bidding closes Wednesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. Stop by the Thrift Store on Skyland Drive to view the items.

THE HRH GIFT SHOP will host a Masquerade $5 Jewelry Sale on Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, in the hospital’s private dining room. Thursday hours will be 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Friday hours will be from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.

MRS. S. FABRICS will have a May “bag month” with classes and demonstrations on how to make an assortment of bags, purses, and totes. The month starts out with a free demonstration by Laura Nelle Goebel, quiltmaker and fabric artist, on Friday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m. The demonstration will feature plates and purses created from clothesline and fabric, using simple wrapping and coiling methods and zigzag stitching. For more information on classes, visit the store on Main Street or call (828) 273-0344.

THE SUZUKI FLUTE PROGRAM at The Music Village in Cullowhee is accepting new students ages 3 to adult. Beginning through advanced students are welcome. For more information, call Lori Richards at 293-5600 or visit online at www.themusicvillage-nc.com.

CLEANUP DAYS are set for Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10, at Webster Memorial Cemetery. Anyone with relatives buried at the cemetery is encouraged to attend. Those physically unable to make repairs can send donations to Carol and April Riser, co-treasurers of Webster Methodist Church, P.O. Box 548, Webster, NC 28788. For more information, call Neal Morgan at 586-5345; Carol Riser at 586-4810; or Louise Stephens at (828) 456-6417.
