The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers. Deadline for obituary news is 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased’s children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased are items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Kenneth Jones

Kenneth Jones, 81, of Andrews, died Friday, April 25, 2008, at his residence.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with the Revs. Eric Jones and Edward “Bo” Phillips officiating.

Burial was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Brooks, Jason Queen, Glen Barnett, Junior Smith and Phillip and Stanley Gibson. Honorary pallbearers were Arnold Clark and Bill Stiles.

A native of Cherokee County where he had lived most of his life, he was a son of the late Pen and Mamie Spivey Jones. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. He worked as an automotive and heavy equipment mechanic for many years and retired after 30 years as a shop foreman for the N.C. Department of Transportation. A member of Beaver Creek Freewill Baptist Church, he was also a member of the Andrews Masonic Lodge #529.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Thelma Allison Jones; three daughters, Louise Stewart of Augusta, Ga., Carolyn Moore of Waynesville and Diane West of Andrews; two sons, David Jones of Dillsboro and Terry Jones of Murphy; one sister, Patricia Jones of Andrews; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Vinny Jenkins

Robert Vincent “Vinny” Jenkins, 99, of Bryson City, formerly of Sylva, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Crisp Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Christy and Dr. Charles A. Jenkins officiating.

Burial was in Thomas Cemetery, Qualla.

Born Feb. 9, 1909, to the late William T. and Flora Calhoun Jenkins, he was a native of Swain County and was a member of the first organized football team at Swain County High School. He was a crew member on the team that originally surveyed the Blue Ridge Parkway and in addition to his own businesses, he retired from Alcoa as a bridge and dam builder. His many projects involved the building of all of the dams on the East Fork of the Tuckaseigee River in addition to the Fontana Dam. He was a longtime member of Sylva First United Methodist Church and had served as chairman of the Democratic Party in both Swain and Jackson counties.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Harriet Hall Jenkins; and two brothers, Ralph Jenkins and Virgil Jenkins.

Surviving are one son, Vincent H. “Buck” Jenkins of Hendersonville; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the Sylva First Methodist Church, 77 Jackson St., Sylva, NC 28779.

Edwina Willard

Edwina Ward Willard, 78, of the Masonic and Eastern Star Home, Greensboro, died Monday, April 28, 2008.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home North Elm Chapel.

Burials was in Friedberg Moravian Church Cemetery, Winston-Salem.

A member of Lee’s Chapel United Methodist Church, she enjoyed knitting and ceramics.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Foust Willard; and one sister, Hattie Jean Ashe.

Surviving are one son, Johnny Ward Willard of Rockingham County; one daughter Annette Willard Wood of Browns Summit; two brothers, Dan Ward and James “Jim” Ward, both of Sylva; one sister, Sara Bess Willard of Randleman; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Pansy Randolph

Pansy Edwards Randolph, 89, of Little Creek, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus, Asheville.

Services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home with the Revs. Dayton Lewis and Bill Mitchell officiating. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lewis Cemetery.

A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John Henry and Gertha Edwards and a lifelong member of Little Creek Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Randolph, who died in 2000; three sons, Devon, Everett and Permon Randolph; and one sister, Wilma Bradford.

Surviving are one son, R.M. Randolph of Burnsville; one daughter, Sue Styles of Sylva; one sister, Letha Lewis of Burnsville; one brother, Roy Collins of Marion; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

James Doherty

James Parker Doherty, 41, of Rutherfordton, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at his residence.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at St. Judes Catholic Church, Cashiers.

Born in Houston, Texas on Sept. 12, 1966, he moved to Cashiers with his family in 1972. A son of Frank and Phyllis Doherty of Cashiers, he graduated in 1985 from Cullowhee High School, where he played football. He attended Western Carolina University before transferring to Penn State University, where he graduated in 1989 with a degree in turf grass management.

He interned at Augusta National Golf Course, was assistant superintendent at Oakmont Country Club, Pittsburgh, Pa., and was superintendent at Greenvalley Country Club in Travelers Rest, S.C., and at Lake Toxaway Country Club. He was the head agronomist of seven course for The Links Group in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Pawleys Island, S.C., was owner of Lady’s Island Country Club in Beaufort, S.C., and was presently a partner and owner of a golf course in Aiken, S.C. He was also the owner of Capitol Resort Properties LLC in Rutherfordton.

He enjoyed the outdoors, doing landscape work, building waterfalls, the low country of South Carolina and the mountains of Western North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jim and Betty Doherty and Dale Parker.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife of 19 years, Mindy Barnes Doherty; grandmother, Eleanor Parker of Cashiers; and one sister, Kim Doherty-Dillard of Cashiers.

Manuel Montelongo

Manuel “Bo” Montelongo, 54, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 27, at Yellowhill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. James “Red” Bradley officiating. Nephews were pallbearers.

A native of Cherokee, he was a son of the late Anacleto and Nora Thompson Montelongo.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Elvia Montelongo.

Surviving are his wife, Mary “Missy” Crowe; four sons, Manuel “Manny” Montelongo Jr., Michael Robert Montelongo of Las Vegas, Nev., Mateo Fountain of St. Augustine, Fla., and Simon Edward Montelongo of the home; two daughters, Lauwana Jo Montelongo and Ella Nora Montelongo, both of the home; six brothers, Anacleto Montelongo of Villa Rica, Ga., Raymond Montelongo of Lapwai, Idaho, Daniel “Boone” Montelongo of Santa Rosa, Calif., David Montelongo of Cherokee; Mark Espinosa of San Francisco, Calif., and John Espinosa of Ontario, Canada; four sisters, Sarah Desmond of Santa Rosa, Mary Esther Durran of Yuba City, Calif., and Ermalinda Montelongo and Lisa Montelongo, both of Cherokee.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Shirley Mills

Shirley Shuler Mills, 87, of Mineral Springs Road, Sylva, died Friday, April 25, 2008, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Ochre Hill Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Sean Joplin and Johnny Norris officiating.

Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were grandsons.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Erastus H. and Nora Mae Shuler.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Mills, who died in 2003; one daughter, Patricia Keener; one brother, Ralph Shuler; and one sister, Ruie Dean.

Surviving are two daughters, Cledis Adler of Woodstock, Ga., and Daisy Henson of Sylva; one son, Danny Mills of Waynesville; one sister, Gaynell Garrett of Sumter, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Skyland Care Center Activity Fund, 193 Skyland Dr., Sylva, NC 28779.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Helen Hames

Helen F. Hames, 81, of Mitchell Road, Sylva, died Friday, April 25, 2008, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Additional services were held in the chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home, Smyrna, Ga., at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28.

Burial was in Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were grandsons.

A native of Gastonia, she had lived in Jackson County for the past 24 years.

A daughter of the late Tom and Flora Matheson Mitchell, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Hames, who died in 1985; and one son, Herman.

Surviving are two daughters, Kris “Kay” Hulsey of Atlanta, Ga., and Sheila Turner of Dallas, Ga.; one son, Brad Hames of Hiram, Ga.; one brother, Gene Mitchell of Sylva; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.



Harriet Burnett

Harriet Falls Burnett, 70, of Forest Run Road, Whittier, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Tsali Care Nursing Center after an extended illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, Franklin, with the Rev. David Scheyer officiating, with an informal reception following.

Born in Pittsfield, Mass., she was a daughter of the late O.B. Jr. and Betty Falls and had lived in Jackson County since 1999. She received a masters degree from Tulane University in 1972 and her bachelors degree from Middlebury College in 1959. She retired in 1998 from New Orleans City Government as director of the Department of Safety and Permits. She was active in the New Orleans League of Women Voters and Planned Parenthood of Louisiana.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Walter Burnett; one daughter, Karen Burnett of Van Nuys, Calif.; one son, Laird Burnett of Chevy Chase, Md.; two sisters, Margaret DiBianco and Susan Fegley, both of Nokomis, Fla.; and two grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harriet and Walter Burnett Scholarship, Tulane University, P.O. Box 61075, New Orleans, LA 70161-9986.

Ollie Tolley

Ollie Maney Tolley, 82, of Cherokee, died Friday, April 25, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center, Bryson City, after an extended illness.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, at Goose Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Watkins officiating.

Burial was in Hyatt Cemetery.

A daughter of the late Posey and Avie Mathis Maney, she was a native of Swain County. Having lived most of her life in Jackson County, she was a crafter at Qualla Arts and Crafts. She was a member of Hyatt Chapel Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William L. “Dink” Tolley, who died in 2000; one son, Lawrence “Bud” Tolley; three sisters; four brothers; and one grandson.

Surviving are three sons, Leonard Tolley and Glenn “Doc” Tolley, both of Cherokee, and Daniel Tolley of Jacksonville, Ala.; one sister, Marie Sturgil of Rutherford College; three brothers, Posey Maney Jr. of Rutherford College, Carl Maney of Bryson City and Fred Maney of Sylacauga, Ala.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Eula Bumgarner

Eula M. Bumgarner, 83, of Sheep Rock Cove Road, Whittier, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, May 1), at Campground Cemetery. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

A native of Rutherfordton, she had lived in Jackson County most of her life. She retired from Jackson County Social Services as a social worker.

A daughter of the late Levi and Ethel Caroll Mathis, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Bumgarner, who died in 2000; and seven siblings.

Surviving are five daughters, Louise Bumgarner of Bryson City, Frances Bumgarner of Walhalla, S.C., Teresa Brown and Lisa Calhoun, both of Raleigh, and Linda Gangstad of El Paso, Texas; three sisters, Eunice Wiggins of Whittier, Vernnie Bradley and Hester Morgan, both of Darington, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
