North Henderson hands Mustangs loss in league
North Henderson jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings Friday and went on to a 9-5 Western Athletic Conference baseball victory over Smoky Mountain at North.
Ethan Pressley was three of three for the Knights. Andrew Harris and Michael Lolley both had two hits.
Mitch Mincey and Jordan Moss each went two of four to pace the Mustangs (3-14, 2-6),
“It was a well-played game.” Coach Jamie Extine said. “We were down 6-0 and could have quit, but we cut the lead to 8-5 and left the bases loaded. We’re playing about as well as we’ve played all year.”
North took a 3-0 lead in the first on Jordan Brunelle’s sacrifice fly and Lolley’s two-run triple.
The Knights made it 6-0 in the second as Harris doubled in a run and Caleb Bryan had a two-run double.
SM got on the board in the third as Matt Nicholson walked, Jesse Henkel singled and Jared Jones had an RBI single.
North got that run back in the bottom of the frame on Brian Ray’s RBI double for a 7-1 advantage.
Moss singled and Nicholson walked in the fourth ahead of McKenzie Queen’s run-scoring single cutting the gap to 7-2.
The Knights responded with Brunelle’s RBI single making it 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Jones was hit by a pitch in the fifth and Mincey walked. Justin Price and Nicholson both had RBI singles, and another run scored on a delayed steal as the Mustangs came within 8-5.
North scored the game’s final run in the sixth on a wild pitch.
Justin Lanning pitched the first four innings for the win.
SM started Josh Ammons (0-1) took the loss.
The Mustang JVs are 8-5 after a 12-6 win at home.
Hunter Hodgin was four of four with three RBIs, and Jared Couch was three of three. Joe Lee added two hits.
Lee was the winning pitcher with 4.2 innings of one-hit relief.
