Lady Mustangs hold on to defeat E. Henderson

Smoky Mountain jumped to a 6-1 lead and held on for a 6-5 Western Athletic Conference softball victory over East Henderson on April 22 at Webster.

“We scored all our runs in the first two innings then held them off,” Coach Tony Quinn said. “It got scary at the end.”

East scored in the first, but SM took a 2-1 edge in the bottom of the frame. Cassie Randall singled, Shayla Jackson walked, and they came home on a double by Trish Brooks, who was three of three at the plate.

SM made it 6-1 in the second. Singles by Erika Henson and Chelsea Elders started the inning. Randall had an RBI double, and Jackson drove in a run with an infield out. Megan Taylor capped the rally with a two-run homer.

The Lady Eagles chipped away with an error allowing a run in the first and two errors leading to two runs in the fifth.

They picked up one run in the seventh and had two runners on base when the game ended.

Randall had two hits in three at-bats.

It was the team’s first game since being off a week for spring break.

Megan Taylor made her first pitching appearance since being hit on the arm by a pitch two weeks earlier. She went three innings, and Brooks pitched the last four.
