Furman sweeps SC baseball series from Western Carolina

Furman swept a three-game Southern Conference baseball series from Western Carolina over the weekend at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.

Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Paladins marked the first time the Catamounts (19-24, 7-11) had been swept at home since 2004.

Brian Harrison’s two-run triple in the seventh put Furman ahead for good at 6-4.

Stephen Notaro homered in the WCU eighth to account for the final.

His two-run single had given the Cats a 2-0 edge in the second.

Both teams scored in the third leaving WCU up 3-1. Connor Lind had an RBI single for the Paladins, and Western countered when Tyler Kirkpatrick drove in a run with a fielder’s choice.

The Paladins tied it 3-3 in the fourth as Joey Rodgers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Marcus Rose had an RBI single.

Western regained the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the frame as Barrett Shaft drove in a run with a ground ball.

Harrison’s RBI single tied it 4-4 in the fifth.

Rose, Harrison, Ryan Lee and Matt Hemingway all had two hits for Furman.

Notaro led the Cats with three hits, and Nick Liles had two.

Furman reliever Ian Perry pitched four innings for the win.

WCU reliever Chris Masters (4-4) took the loss.

The Paladins put together a pair of six-run innings and rolled to a 13-4 win Saturday. Jay Jackson was three of five with four RBIs while Rose, Lee, Hemingway, Bobby Hubbard and Reese Wade all had two hits.

The Paladins took a 6-0 lead in the first. The big blow was Jackson’s three-run homer. Lind and Rodgers both had RBI singles.

Blake Murphy’s sacrifice fly and an error helped the Cats cut the gap to 6-2 in the bottom of the first.

WCU closed within 6-4 after Kirkpatrick’s RBI single in the third and Dylan de Graaf’s steal of home as part of a double steal in the fourth.

Rodgers sacrifice fly put Furman up 7-4 in the fifth.

The Paladins broke the game open with six runs in the eighth. Hubbard had a two-run double, and Lee singled in a pair. Jackson added an RBI single.

Liles, Murphy and Brent Greer all had two hits for the Cats.

Mason Smith pitched into the seventh inning for Furman and got the win.

WCU starter Drew Saberhagen (3-6) pitched just one inning and took the loss.

Jackson gave up just four hits in eight innings of Friday’s 4-2 Furman win. Nick Karow picked up the save.

Mike Tavernier (3-3) took the loss. Just one of the four runs he allowed in seven innings was earned.

Furman took advantage of three errors to score three runs in the second.

Reid Rollison’s two-run homer narrowed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame.

The Paladins scored in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Wade, who had two hits.
