Fortner wins track meet in high jump
Smoky Mountain’s C.J. Fortner won the high jump at the Western Athletic Conference Track Meet held April 23 at North Henderson.
He cleared 6 feet 2 inches, which is a regional qualifying mark.
“C.J. was wonderful,” Coach Pam Dehdashty said. “That makes him all-conference in the high jump.”
Katie Spiro placed in three events for the Lady Mustangs. She was second in the long jump (15-0) and tied for second in the 200-meter dash (13.81). She finished fourth in the 100 (13.81).
Spiro was part of the 800 relay team that placed fourth in 2:00. She was joined by Sarah Moore, Karrinda Franklin and Ali Taylor.
The 400 relay team of Moore, Taylor, Franklin and Amanda Smith placed second in 57.13.
Placing fifth were Moore in the long jump (13-4.5), Taylor in the 100 (13.92) and Holly Setzer in the 3,200 (14:32).
Moore was sixth in the 200 in 29.25.
Jonathan Tannehill and Chad Harris both placed in three events for the Mustang men.
Tannehill was second in the long jump (19-5), fifth in the triple jump (40-0) and sixth in the 100 (12.10).
Harris was third in the 100 (11.72), fourth in the 200 (24.22) and fifth in the discus (105-6).
Spencer McDonald finished second in the discus at 118-8.
Jesse Brooks was third in the shot put at 41-4.5.
West Henderson won the women’s meet with 222 points to North Henderson’s 101. Pisgah was third at 77 followed by East Henderson (70), Brevard (54) and SM (49).
West also took the men’s meet with 182 points to North’s 107. Brevard was third at 100 followed by Pisgah (64), East (51) and SM (48).
“We’re just hoping everyone who placed in the meet will qualify for the regionals,” Dehdashty said.
The regionals are set for Saturday May 3, at North Henderson.
