Downtown ‘Art After Dark’ events to begin this Friday
This year’s first Art After Dark event is set to begin Friday, May 2, from 6:30 until 9 p.m.
Held the first Friday of every month from May through December, “Art After Dark” opens galleries up for public viewing and brings visitors and residents alike downtown for dining, shopping, music and local art.
Several downtown galleries will be participating and have special events or demonstrations planned for this Friday’s event. Some of the offerings will include:
– It’s by Nature Gallery presents “Dancing Elephants, Curious Fairies and Elegant Unicorns” by fiber doll artist Zan Barnes.
– Bubacz’s Underground Cafe will host a an artists’ reception for “Fables,” a solo-show of illustrations by Shirl Sazynski-Unrath. The show will run from through Thursday, May 15.
– Gallery One will feature three art exhibits from the Jackson County Visual Arts Association.
Watercolor painter Pam Haddock and fiber artist Elizabeth Garlington will be featured. There will also be a members’ art exhibit which will include a wide variety of images and media centered around the theme of “Spring in the Mountains.”
– Spring Street Cafe will host Alan Hantz, a professor and chairman in the department of mass communication at UNC-Asheville where he teaches communication law, photojournalism and media aesthetics. His imaging work has been seen at UNC-A’s Malcolm Blowers Gallery, Pack Memorial Library in Asheville and the McNay Museum of Art in San Antonio, Texas.
– Modern Artifacts will feature marble making demonstrations with Tom Hanks.
– Penumbra Gallery and Studio will feature original photography by Matthew Turlington.
–Papous’s Wine Bar and Art Gallery will present works by Cullowhee watercolor artist Joseph Meigs.
– Guadalupe Cafe will display acrylic paintings and charcoals by artist Audrey Ellington. An artist’s reception is set for Saturday, May 3.
– The Killer Creek Co. will feature authentic, hand-crafted “Southern rustic” furniture.
