Readers invited to enter Herald’s 11th annual spring photo contest

Painted trillium, delicate apple blossoms, budding trees, children and pets in the yard for the first time in months ... The Sylva Herald wants to see your vision of spring.
Readers are invited to submit photos in the paper’s 11th annual “Mountain Spring” photography contest. The best photos – including first-, second- and third-place winners – will be displayed at the newspaper office during May and June. Winners will be announced during Sylva’s “Greening Up the Mountains” festival Saturday, April 26, and will be published in subsequent editions of the newspaper. Prizes this year include a one-year Herald subscription for first place in each category.
The photos should reflect the theme, “Mountain Spring,” and should be outdoor scenes displaying the beauty and renewal of spring. Preference will be given to photos taken in Jackson and other Western North Carolina counties.
Photographs submitted should be in color and must have been taken by the entrant. Photos may have been taken any year, not necessarily this spring. Participants may enter up to two photos for consideration.
The Sylva Herald invites area photographers to submit images that capture their vision of spring – like this shot by Joe Nolen of Whittier – to the newspaper’s ninth annual “Mountain Spring” photo contest. Entries are due by 5 p.m. Thursday, April 17, and will be displayed at The Herald office during May and June. Winners will be announced during the Saturday, April 26, Greening Up the Mountains festival.
Photos should be at least 5 by 7 inches and should be unmounted and unframed. An entry blank must be taped to the back of each picture.
Those entering digital images must supply a CD or e-mail their image(s) in addition to providing a print that can be displayed. Due to the large volume of entries, prints and CDs cannot be returned.
In one category, “Creative/Artistic/Digitally Enhanced,” entrants may take artistic license to manipulate and touch up their images.
“With the pervasiveness of digital cameras, we find more and more people are starting to produce work that is more creative, and we want to include those photographers,” said Herald Photo Editor Nick Breedlove,
Photos entered in this category may have elements added or subtracted; be selectively colored; and may be altered in other ways with computer software such as Photoshop. However, all photos entered must conform to the contest’s spring theme.
“Last year we had a record number of entries, and almost half were digital,” Breedlove said.
The deadline for entering The Sylva Herald’s “Mountain Spring” photo contest is Thursday, April 17, at 5 p.m.

“Greening Up the Mountains,” a downtown street festival sponsored by the Downtown Sylva Association (formerly Sylva Partners in Renewal), is held annually on the last Saturday in April. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to watch traditional craft demonstrations and hear a variety of music. Food and craft vendors will also be on hand.
