Panthers down Smoky Mountain in non-conference baseball action
Franklin jumped to a 6-0 lead Saturday and held on for an 8-5 non-conference baseball victory over Smoky Mountain at the SM field.
“We battled the whole way,” Coach Jamie Extine said. “We had one bad inning, but we kept going.”
The Panthers went up 2-0 in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Christian Vose and Austin Bishop’s RBI single.

Franklin extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth. Casey Burnette had a leadoff home run, and Vose again walked with the bases loaded. Bishop followed with a two-run single.
C.J. Fortner’s two-run homer cut the gap to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Panthers scored for the third time on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. This one was to Justin Stamey making it 7-2.
The Mustangs (1-7) made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth. Jordan Moss walked and Matt Nicholson singled. Andy Potter, Justin Price and Mitch Mincey all had RBI singles as SM closed within 7-5.
Stamey had an RBI double for an insurance run in the seventh.
Bishop and Burnette were both two of four at the plate.
Potter and Mincey each went two of four for the Mustangs.
Bishop pitched the first four innings for the win.
Sammy Matthews (1-2) started and took the loss for SM.
