Messer fires two-hitter as Brevard rolls by SM

Wyatt Messer pitched a two-hitter as Brevard defeated Smoky Mountain 11-1 in the Western Athletic Conference baseball opener March 18 at Brevard.

The game was called in the bottom of the sixth due to the 10-run rule.

“They’re a good team,” Coach Jamie Extine said. “They can hit the ball. We had three errors, but we just got beat by a very good team.”

Nathan Hyatt’s RBI double and Andrew Blackwell’s sacrifice fly put the Blue Devils up 2-0 in the first.

Brevard added a run in the second and two in the third before Hyatt’s homer made it 6-0 in the fifth.

Jordan Moss’ RBI single put SM on the board in the sixth.

The Devils clinched the win with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Four of the runs scored on two errors.

Chris Mulenex had three hits for the Devils. Blackwell, Hyatt and Tyler Coan all had two hits.

Sammy Matthews (1-1) was the losing pitcher.

Brevard’s JVs won 11-4 at SM. Will Clarke gave up four hits and struck out four in five innings, but the Devils pulled away late.

“It was closer than the score indicated,” Coach Adam Gray said.

Dakota Meadows and Brett Baucom both had two hits.

The JVs crushed Swain 23-3 the previous day at Bryson City.

Jesse Walker was the winning pitcher. He gave up four hits and fanned six before the game was called after five innings.

Clarke had two hits.

“They made quite a few errors,” Gray said of Swain.
