Mary Patterson of Cullowhee, a cancer survivor herself, is doing her part in the fight against cancer.
Patterson has joined the Western North Carolina Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Team in Training” and has begun training to participate in a marathon. Patterson said she hopes to raise $2,200 before April 14.
She will participate in the Country Music Marathon on April 26 in Nashville, Tenn. According to Patterson, she is training for the half-marathon. Patterson said she is doing the marathon in memory of Larry Watson who died in December 2005 of acute myelogenous leukemia and in honor of Richard Sitton, who is currently battling that disease.
“I decided I was physically able and had the time to do this,” she said. “Even though Larry didn’t live long enough to benefit from the Leukemia society, if I could help someone else, it would be worth it.”
Patterson battled cancer herself 31 years ago when she discovered a walnut-sized lump in one breast. After a lumpectomy, she has been cancer-free ever since.
