Lady Mustangs rally by North Buncombe

Smoky Mountain scored four runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 6-5 non-conference softball victory over North Buncombe on March 19 at Webster.

“Coming from behind is always big,” Coach Tony Quinn said. “We didn’t do that enough last year.”

SM trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the fifth. Cassie Randall got the rallied stated when she was hit by a pitch, and Miriam Brown followed with a single. Megan Taylor had an RBI single, and Jessica Cabe’s two-run single tied the score. Chelsea Elders then singled to drive in what prove to be the game-winning run.

North took a 2-0 lead in the first on an error and Pearl Foster’s RBI single.

A pair of errors helped the Lady Mustangs cut the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the first.

Foster’s two-run homer put the Lady Hawks up 4-1 in the third.

SM cut the gap to 4-2 on Taylor’s RBI single in the bottom of the third.

Amanda Allen tripled and scored on Foster’s infield out giving North a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth.

Taylor had two hits in three at-bats. She pitched five innings of relief for the win and struck out seven while waking no one.

“She slowed down their scoring and gave us an opportunity to come back,” Quinn said of Taylor.

“Cassie had a big day,” he added. “She scored three runs and had a double.”
