Hot-shooting MTSU crushes WCU women
Hot-shooting Middle Tennessee crushed Western Carolina 104-69 in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament on March 19 at MTSU.
The Lady Raiders hit 59 percent of their field goal attempts and canned 13 three-pointers. They were almost perfect at the foul line, where they went 19 of 20.
Meanwhile, Western (25-9) shot just 40.3 percent from the field, including three of 15 three-pointers.
Amber Holt, the nation’s leading scorer, poured in 30 points helping MTSU avenge a regular season loss. She had plenty of help as Chelsea Lymon (13), Brandi Brown (13), Starr Orr (12), Jackie Pickel (11) and Anne Marie Lanning (10) were all in double figures.
Monique Dawson and Emily Clarke paced the Lady Cats with 18 points apiece. Lauren Powell finished with 10.
The Lady Raiders jumped to a 9-0 lead after Lymon’s three-pointer with 16:56 to go in the first half.
WCU managed just one field goal in the first six and a half minutes and trailed 20-3 following Emily Queen’s trey at the 13:34 mark.
Brown drained a three-pointer in the final seconds of the half making it 51-26.
Consecutive treys by Pickel and Latoya Barclay pushed the margin to 77-41 with 11 minutes to go.
The game’s biggest lead was 84-45 on two Holt free throws at the 9:36 mark.
The Lady Raiders hit the century mark with 2:47 on the clock when Lymon’s two foul shots put her team up 100-63.
Queen’s 10 rebounds helped MTSU to a 34-29 edge on the boards. Chevon Keith led the Lady Cats with seven.
Western committed 21 turnovers, and the Lady Raiders had 18.
Completing the WCU scoring were Ashley Pellom with seven, Keith and Kendra Eaton with five apiece, Heather Swayne with four and Jessika Johnson with two.
