Georgia tops Western with seven-run fourth

Georgia scored seven runs in the fourth inning to claim an 8-3 non-conference baseball win March 18 at Georgia.

The Catamounts held a 2-0 lead in the second on Tyler Kirkpatrick’s two-run single.

Gordon Beckham’s two-run homer tied it for the Bulldogs in the fourth. Matt Olson’s RBI double put his team ahead to stay. Lyle Allen and Ryan Piesel both added RBI singles with the final two runs coming on an error and a wild pitch.

WCU trimmed the deficit to 7-3 in the fifth on Brent Greer’s RBI single.

An error helped Georgia score its last run in the sixth.

Bulldog reliever Alex McRee was the winning pitcher.

Western reliever Matt Benedict (0-1) retired just one of the five batters he faced in the fourth and took the loss.

Georgia managed just six hits, three by Piesel, but took advantage of 11 walks and three errors.

Greer and Ryan Mathews both had two hits for the Cats.
