Eagles defeat SM with 10 runs in fifth inning
East Henderson erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to defeat Smoky Mountain 11-1 in Western Athletic Conference baseball action last Thursday at East.
The game was called at that point due to the 10-run rule as the Mustangs fell to 0-2 in the WAC.
“We played four pretty good innings,” Coach Jamie Extine said. “They jumped on us in the fifth, but that’s the way baseball is sometimes.”
Lane Poston’s two-run double and a two-run single by Lex Justus were the big hits in the frame. Two runs scored on an error.
Both teams scored a run in the second. Josh Ammons singled and came home on Jesse Henkel’s fielder’s choice for the SM run.
Jared Jones started on the mound for the Mustangs but left after facing just two batters due to an elbow problem.
Justin Price (0-1) replaced him and kept the Eagles under control until the fifth.
Loren King gave up just three hits to pick up the win.
Justus was two of three at the plate.
The Mustang JVs are 3-3 after a 9-7 win at home.
“That’s the first game that everything worked the way it was supposed to,” Coach Adam Gray said.
Joe Lee pitched five innings and gave up four hits for the win. Makenzie Queen pitched the final inning for the save.
“Lee had a dominating performance and shut them down,” Gray said.
Matt Nicholson and Chris Matthews were both three of four. Dakota Meadows added two hits.
