The congregation of Sylva Baptist Chruch gathered near Sylva Methodist Church for this photo, which is thought to have been taken around 1924. Among those pictured are Corsey Buchanan (on both ends), Lawrence Monteith, Love Shaver, Tom Gribble, Laura Higdon, Cordelia Buchanan, Relus Dills, George Sutton, Bob Sherrill, Raymon Deitz, Dr. D.D. Hooper, Logan Buchanan, Sam Monteith, Odell Dillard, Erskine Brown, Ott Powell, Professor Hough, Jonah Dills, Frank Monteith, Lewis Moore, Frank Clouse, Mary Chastain, Pearl Chastain, Everette Brown, Myra Loftis, Will Nell Higdon, Minnie Grindstaff, Harold Grindstaff, Mrs. Sam Monteith, Sally Mae Monteith Campbell, Lillian Sutton Campbell, Hattie Hilda Sutton Allison, Malcolm Brown, Margaret Brown Williams, Rachel Brown Phillips, Paul Buchanan, Edith Buchanan, Dorothy Buchanan Higdon, Luetta Wilson, Lillian Barker Buchanan, Jometa Higdon, Dillard Coward and Ruth Gribble Shrader. The house closest to the Courthouse is still standing and is the Ernest Burch residence. Other buildings pictured include the Billy Davis (later Jim Pangle) house, and the Henry Curtis house. Sylva Baptist was established in 1888 and built its first sanctuary and educational building in 1908 and 1938, respectively. Those structures were located in part of what is now the SunTrust parking lot and were torn down around 1972 after the church built first a new educational building and then a sanctuary across Landis (then Walnut) Street where the E.L. and Gertrude Dills McKee home once stood. This photo may look familiar to Herald readers; an identical photo of the Sylva Methodist congregation, taken on the same day, was published this past November and is still available online.
