Year’s first snow
Bishop Knight, 7, of Sylva gets a little help sledding from his father, Willis, as snow accumulated in Sylva for the first time this year last Thursday (Jan. 17). According to Department of Transportation county maintenance engineer Lori Jones, accumulations ranged from an inch in Cherokee to 6 inches in Balsam. Sylva received around 3 inches. More winter weather hit Saturday with an inch in the downtown area. County schools were closed Thursday, but classes resumed Friday. The first day of semester exams at Smoky Mountain High School was moved up to Wednesday in anticipation of the bad weather with exams ending Friday as scheduled. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
