Western Carolina women roll to victory over Lady Terriers

Western Carolina outscored Wofford a combined 34-3 during a pair of second half runs Saturday to claim a 76-55 Southern Conference women’s basketball road victory.

Monique Dawson and Lauren Powell scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, for WCU.

Liz Miller led the Lady Terriers with 17 points.

Wofford was up 34-30 after Kelsi Koenig’s basket with 18:33 to go in the game when the Lady Cats went on their first scoring run.

Powell had seven in the 18-1 spurt for a 48-35 lead on Kristen Feemster’s layup at the 12:01 mark.

The Lady Terriers cut the gap to 54-48 on Miller’s three-point play with 8:11 remaining.

Western put the game away with a 16-2 spurt, including six by Ashley Pellom, for a 70-50 lead with 3:43 on the clock.

The final represented the game’s largest lead.

WCU was on top almost the entire first half. The biggest margin was 12-3 with 14:27 to play after Emily Clarke’s four straight points capped a 9-0 run.

The Lady Terriers chipped away and took their only lead of the half, 27-26, on Ashley Kroker’s three-pointer at the 1:04 mark.

The teams were tied 28-28 at intermission.

WCU shot 45.5 percent from the field while holding Wofford to 34.4 percent.

Chevon Keith’s eight rebounds helped Western to a 43-38 edge on the boards. Mahagony Williams led the Lady Terriers with six.

Wofford was hurt by 26 turnovers while the Lady Cats had 18.

Completing the WCU scoring were Clarke and Jessika Johnson with eight apiece, Keith, Pellom and Heather Swayne all with six, Feemster and Kendra Carroll both with four, and Kendra Eaton with one.
