Smoky Mountain swim teams finish second at league meet
Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s swim teams both placed second in Monday’s Western Athletic Conference Meet held at Asheville School.
The event was postponed from Saturday due to inclement weather.
Annelise Davis was the top individual finisher for the Lady Mustangs in the women’s meet. She won the 50-yard freestyle with a state consideration time of 27.63.

On the men’s side, the 200 free relay team of Paul Heckert, Patrick Savell, Ronnie Mau and Josh Young came out on top. Their time of 1:47.82 qualified them for the state meet.
West Henderson won the women’s meet with 130 points. SM was second at 91 followed by East Henderson (63), Pisgah (10) and North Henderson (7).
West also took the men’s meet with 138 points to SM’s 58. East was third with 41 followed by North (19) and Pisgah (4).
Other Lady Mustangs placing in the top four in individual events included with * indicating a state consideration time:
Starlyn Matheny, fourth, 200 free, 2:47.89; Paige Seago, second, 200 individual medley, 2:44.79*, second, 100 butterfly, 1:13.48*; Rachel Graning, fourth, 200 IM, 3:27.25, third, 100 fly, 1:34.51; Ally Sapienza, fourth, 500 free, 8:43.33; Miranda Myers, fourth, 100 backstroke, 1:24.54.
Women’s relay teams placing included:
200 medley (Matheny, Kelly Moore, Seago and Davis), second, 2:18.39*; 200 free (Davis, Moore, Seago and Katie Hayes), second, 2:03.61*; and 400 free (Nicole Benavides, Hannah Collins, Graning and Myers), third, 4:34.86*.
Men’s swimmers in the top four of individual events included:
Alex Madill, second, 100 back, 1:33.45; Heckert, fourth, 100 breaststroke, 1:21.15; Mau, fourth, 50 free, 27.01; Savell, second, 100 fly, 1:08.79*
Relay teams placing second were 200 medley (Heckert, Savell, Young and Mau) in 2:06.83* and 400 free (Savell, Heckert, Young and Mau) in 4:20.84*.
The 1A/2A state meet is set for Feb. 2 at N.C. State’s Willis Casey Aquatic Center in Raleigh.
