Lady Cats breeze to league win at Furman

Kendra Eaton scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds Monday leading Western Carolina to a 77-62 Southern Conference women’s basketball victory at Furman.

Chevon Keith added 11 points for the Lady Cats (14-5, 6-1).

Furman, which remained winless in the league at 0-8, was led by Lee Stephens with 15 points. Also in double figures were Sarah Baker with 11 and Chrissy Phelps with 10.

Western never trailed and took the lead for good at 7-5 on Jessika Johnson’s basket with 16:59 to go in the first half. That started a string of 13 unanswered points, capped by Keith’s jumper, making it 18-5 with 5:01 on the clock.

Eight consecutive points, including four by Eaton, built the margin to 38-19 on Ashley Pellom’s layup at the 2:45 mark, and WCU led 42-26 at intermission.

The game’s biggest lead was 63-42 on Pellom’s layup with 9:40 to play.

The Lady Paladins made a late run with nine straight points, including five by Katie Agin, cutting the gap to 70-60 with 3:28 on the clock. That was as close as they would come.

WCU shot 42.3 percent from the field, and Furman made 39.7 percent of its attempts.

The Lady Cats dominated the boards 49-34. Agin had eight rebounds for the Lady Paladins.

Furman committed 15 turnovers, and Western had 10.

Completing the WCU scoring were Johnson and Kristen Feemster with nine apiece, Monique Dawson and Heather Swayne both with seven, Pellom wth six, Lauren Powell with five, Kendra Carroll with four and Emily Clarke with two.
