Forfeits again cost SM wrestlers in close loss
Despite winning six of eight contested matches, Smoky Mountain dropped a 36-33 Western Athletic Conference wrestling match to East Henderson on Jan. 15 at the SM gym.
“This has been a recurring theme for our season,” Coach Chuck Beane said. “We have lost seven matches this year by three points or less. Since we are typically spotting our opponents anywhere from 30 to 36 points in forfeits, our wrestlers are doing pretty well.”
Michael Taylor upped his record to 20-2 with a pin at 215 pounds.
Also picking up wins for the Mustangs (3-14, 0-2 ) were Billy McClean at 103, Cory Vickery at 140 and Chad Harper at 171.
Rush Allen took an 8-5 decision at 189.
Cruize Frady won by forfeit at 125.
The Eagles had four forfeit wins, and two weight classes resulted in double forfeits.
“Overall, the kids looked pretty good, and they are improving as they get more experience,” Beane said. “Hopefully, we can fight off the injury bug and be strong going into the conference tournament at the end of this month.”
