Pottery fest termed ‘great day’
Even before the morning fog lifted to reveal a beautiful fall day, a crowd had begun to form at the third annual Western North Carolina Pottery festival on Dillsboro’s Front Street. The event, the only all-day, all-pottery festival in WNC, included artists from seven states. The featured potter was Leon Nichols of Charlotte, who demonstrated his technique all day. Known for his larger-than-usual pots, Nichols crafted several that were more than 3 feet tall and attracted a lot of attention, according to Brant Barnes of Riverwood Pottery, who coordinated the event with Tree House Pottery’s Joe Frank McKee and Travis Berning. All the participating potters reported brisk sales, and it was a good day for Dillsboro restaurants as well, since the pottery event does not include food vendors, Barnes said.
