First Baptist’s apple cookbook to raise money for church projects
By Justin Goble
Some of the best cooks at Sylva’s First Baptist Church share recipes in a new cookbook that will raise money for missions and church renovations.
Called “Apple-lachian Recipes: Apple Recipes from the Appalachian Mountains,” the book stays true to its title by focusing solely on recipes that require apples. Along with traditional fare like apple dumplings and apple pie, the book contains more esoteric recipes like apple pizza and apple meat loaf.
According to First Baptist member Nancy P. Coward, who helped put the book together, the idea for an apple-themed cookbook came while church members discussed different ideas for their fund-raising project.
Members of Sylva’s First Baptist Church have published a cookbook titled “Apple-lachian Recipes: Apple Recipes from the Appalachian Mountains.” As the name implies, each recipe requires apples, and recipes vary from traditional apple pies to more exotic treats like apple meat loaf. Proceeds from book sales will go towards church renovations and missions. Each cookbook costs $12, and they can be purchased at the church during office hours or obtained by calling Jenny Hunter at 586-6716 or Nancy P. Coward at 586-8564.
“We hit on that after some brainstorming between Betty Stillwell and Jenny Hunter to do something different,” Coward said. “We’d done a cookbook several years ago, and we didn’t want to do the same thing.
“That, and I think some of the Southern Baptists might have a hidden sympathy for Adam and Eve,” Coward said. “Really, who can turn down a delicious apple?”
After hitting upon a theme, the group got recipes for the book by putting out forms and asking for members’ favorite recipes
“We had an excellent response,” Coward said. “It’s surprising to see the things you can do with an apple.”
Those who purchase the book will not only be getting a collection of recipes – they will be helping the church as well since the proceeds will help fund church projects.
Cookbooks, which cost $12 each, may be purchased at the church during office hours. Books can also be obtained by calling Hunter at 586-6716 or Coward at 586-8564.
