Retired Sylva pharmacist Leo Cowan, who grew up on East Fork and now lives in Tuckasegee, sent in this photo of a late 1940s election day at the old Gay Community Center. The structure was still in use as a polling place into the mid-1970s, according to Cowan’s daughter Melissa Smith of East Fork, who remembers voting there. From left are George Webb (sitting), Roy Buchanan, Joe Bishop, Coot Turpin (inside), Earl Hughes, Chunk Cowan, Sam Buchanan and John Deitz. The men to the right are not known.
