Arts Council calendars are on sale
By Stephanie Salmons
The Jackson County Arts Council 2008 calendar is now for sale in numerous locations around Sylva and the county.
This is the third publication of the calendars that highlight county history.
In years past, the calendars have had a “then and now” theme. However, according to JCAC President, Ray Menze, this year the Arts Council decided on a different idea: historic sites in Jackson County.
“It’s not that we ran out of places for ‘then and now’ but so many people came up to us and asked if we could do something different,” Menze said.
Of Jackson County’s 15 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, 12 were photographed and used in the calendar.
Menze said that it is likely the Arts Council will decided to return to the “then and now” theme in subsequent years but that they could also continue to branch out.
Other calendar themes the Arts Council have considered include bridges of Jackson County, churches of Jackson County and barns of Jackson County, Menze said.
“It will all be always be historical or heritage related,” he said.
The calendars sell for $12 and are available at a number of locations including Annie’s Bakery, Livingston’s Photo, Gallery One, City Lights Bookstore and Riverwood Shops.
Proceeds from the sales benefit the JCAC.
“Every cent goes into art programs in Jackson County,” Menze said.
