A special private sale of antiques and collectibles is planned at Massie’s this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday. A PLAY written four years ago by acclaimed local author and storyteller Gary Carden of Sylva was scheduled to be performed here on Wednesday. Lovedale Baptist Church planned to present “The Bright Forever,” a Carden-penned dramatic monologue about Fanny Crosby, a blind hymnist who wrote more than 9,000 hymns, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. Crosby was active around the turn of the 20th century and used to accompany evangelist Dwight Moody to his chatauquas, which were held across the United States. Near the end of her life, Crosby conducted religious services in New York missions and sang to multitudes of homeless people, Carden said. For the Lovedale performance, Crosby was to be portrayed by Bobbie Curtis of Lenoir, who has done this program for more than 20 churches in North Carolina. She has also frequently performed another Carden drama, “Birdell,” and has received standing ovations for both.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF SYLVA will hold its annual homecoming Sunday, Oct. 14. The Rev. Gerald Keown, associate dean of the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University, will deliver the sermon at the 11 a.m. service, which will be followed by dinner on the grounds and an afternoon concert by church organist William Bush IV in the sanctuary.

DON'T FORGET the regional fly-in set for this Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Jackson County Airport. For more information, call Tom Hagan at (828) 379-4931.

UNCLE BILL'S FLEA MARKET, located on U.S. 74/441 between Sylva and Cherokee, will host gospel musician Bird Youmans Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14. Youmans, owner of Olive Branch Records, has been blessing listeners with his gospel music for many years. Performances will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

WE INCLUDED INCORRECT information last week with regard to a picture of Edward Ward and his pumpkins. We said the photo came from Natalie Elders, which is correct, but we mistakenly identified her as Ward’s daughter. Elders is actually Ward’s granddaughter-in-law – she’s married to Ward’s grandson Dewayne Elders. Ward lives on Bob Hall Road, not Shoal Creek, and the photo from the 1990s that was mentioned was of him with his wife and great-granddaughters. The Herald regrets the errors.

HARRIS REGIONAL HOSPITAL'S AUXILIARY will begin a Silent Auction on Friday, Oct. 12, Items up for bid include six serving pieces; silverplate and nickel/silver; cast-iron peanut bank, cookie tin, and a spindle; three vintage beaded purses and one lucite purse; one vintage quilt; and a harlequin jack-in-the box and doll. Bids close Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m.

THE HRH GIFT SHOP will host a Masquerade $5 Jewelry Sale in the hospital’s main lobby on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 19, from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. The sale will include lots of jewelry and gift items for the holidays. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted.
