Smoky Mountain High School prepares for week-long homecoming activities

Homecoming activities at Smoky Mountain High School will get under way this year with next Monday’s downtown parade.

The school’s annual parade will depart from Mark Watson Park at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, and travel down Main Street before reaching ending at the Sylva Fire Department. This year’s grand marshal is Smoky Mountain’s new principal, Jay Grissom.

Different clubs, grade levels and athletic teams will sponsor floats, and the parade will also include youth football’s Pee Wees and Termites. One float will feature the SMHS homecoming court.

Also on the agenda for SMHS Homecoming Week:

– Monday, Oct. 15: PJ day; home men’s soccer vs. East Henderson, JV beginning at 5 p.m., varsity beginning at 7 p.m.; homecoming door contest, homecoming banner contest.

– Tuesday, Oct. 16: Twin day, away Lady Mustangs’ volleyball at Pisgah, JV beginning at 5 p.m., varsity beginning at 6 p.m.; door contest; banner contest.

– Wednesday, Oct. 17: Cowgirl/cowboy day; faculty talent show in the gym, sponsored by FTA and student council; men’s soccer at North Henderson, JV beginning at 5 p.m, varsity beginning at 7 p.m., door contest judging; banner contest judging; powder puff games on the football field, freshman team vs. senior team beginning at 6:30 p.m., sophomore team vs. junior team beginning at 7 p.m. and the championship game beginning at 7:30 p.m.

– Thursday, Oct. 18: Tie-dye hippie day, pep rally beginning at 2 p.m. where door contest, banner and homecoming float winners will be announced along with Homecoming King; away JV football game at North Henderson beginning at 7 p.m.; cross country meet at Western Carolina University beginning at 4 p.m.

– Friday, Oct. 19: Camo-Blue day, SMHS club sponsored activities from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.; SMHS talent show in the gym; Homecoming football game vs. North Henderson beginning at 7:30; homecoming court and ceremony at halftime; after-game homecoming dance sponsored by the Student Council in the cafeteria.
